Port of Call Ravenna, Italy

Not well known as a tourist destination when compared to its neighbor Venice or Rome and Florence. Ravenna is home to the largest concentration of Christian Byzantine mosaics, art and architecture in Europe if not the world.

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia - The UNESCO citation calls this "the earliest and best preserved of all mosaic monuments, and at the same time one of the most artistically perfect."
Today Ravenna draws tourists especially because of the magnificence of those mosaics along with the the number of fifth century religious buildings in the city. The Basilica of San Vitale is a major church and one of the most important surviving examples of early Christian Byzantine art and architecture in Europe.
