Named after Jesus’s disciple who became Saint Peter, who was executed and buried on the spot where the Basilica now stands. One of the most impressive parts of the Basilica is its incredible dome that itself stands 447 feet tall and is based on a design started by Michelangelo.
In the Vatican and its museum has an impressive collection of art, including St. Peter’s Baldachin by Bernini, The Pietà, sculpted by Michelangelo, a statue of St Peter on his throne and the Michelangelo’s fresco in The Sistine Chapel.
