We’ve spent a lot of time at sea and whales always attract attention. Having seen and photographed a number of whale flukes as they surface, with that iconic view of the tail up out of the water and sliding back under. Spent hours traveling with a large pod of humpbacks seeing mostly backs at the surface and the erupting mists from multiple blows but we’ve never seen a breaching whale erupt almost fully out of the water like in the the above image. Sadly that remains the case – this photo is of the Whale Project in Juneau Alaska.
Tahku – The Whale Project, Juneau—a non-profit was created to develop this park—and the City of Juneau funded the sculpture and accompanying fountain. The project took ten years. Nature expert and sculptor R.T. “Skip” Wallen created “Tahku,”—a six-and-a-half ton, 25-foot tall breaching humpback whale statue imbedded in a fountain.
