Image Of The Day • The Hanging Man

Strolling down Husova Street in Old Prague you’re likely to encounter an unsettling sight. Several stories above the middle of the street is a man just hanging there.

The Hanging Man statue can be found in Prague’s Old Town district. The sculpture was created by artist David Cerny in 1996 as part of an art installation project for the Czech Republic’s Pavilion for Expo ’98 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Cerny planned to do a series of sculptures and claimed The Hanging Man was meant to represent Austria, but it was deemed too controversial and was not included in Expo ’98. Many have said the man has a striking resemblance to Sigmund Freud and while he said that “it was intended for the sculpture to be a commentary on the state of modern society and its tendency towards self-destruction” the allusion to Austria may confirm the statues identity.

Since its installation, The Hanging Man has provoked controversy and while some see it as a thought provoking work of art others see it as an insensitive image of suicide. Still The Hanging Man is one of Prague’s most visited tourist attractions.
