Most European cities feature central markets, and some have several, but few rise to the level of being a major tourist attraction. The Great Market Hall in Budapest (in Hungarian Nagycsarnok) is one that rises to that status. It was built in 1897, and is the most beautiful and largest of Budapest markets. It’s difficult to describe but you can shop its three levels and an annex for spices (paprika is a favorite), fruit, meat, fish, t-shirts, chess sets, eat lunch and finish off your shopping in the Aldi Supermarket in the basement.
