We’ve been in love with Piraeus, Greece for a very long time and have stayed there often. With the Metro just a quick ride into Athens and getting us to the Acropolis station in around 25 minutes for only about US$1.70 each way. Piraeus itself has a less hectic feel and much to offer including a number of good museums, good restaurants, beaches and good shopping. We believe it is also much less expensive than staying in Athens for both restaurants and hotels.
Lilia Hotel

Every time we’re there we stay at the Lilia Hotel (☆☆☆☆+ $$), a small hotel on a side street that includes a light breakfast each morning. Located only three blocks from the port/marina of Pasalimani, and only a 15-minute walk from the hotel to the Dimotiko Theatro metro station for a short trip into Athens. In addition around Pasalimani there’s a wide promenade offering a great selection of nice restaurants. Also the Sklavenitis Supermarket (Leof. Ir. Politechniou 84, Pireas 185 36) for snacks, food and wine is 4 blocks away.

For those looking to board a cruise ship in Piraeus it takes the same time and cost as going into Athens and your ship will be only a short walk or taxi ride away from your hotel.
Parmigiani An Italian Restaurant

Our Favorite Restaurant is Parmigiani (☆☆☆☆+ $$) and we’ve eaten there a number of times – located on the Pasalimani marina/harbor it offers inside seating and covered outside seating across the street that is fully shaded and the views of the water are spectacular. Expect a menu featuring traditional Italian fare that offers really great fresh pasta (there’s a special fresh pasta menu section). Both inside and out service was fast and pleasant.

Judi also loves Pireaus for its numerous Greek restaurants offering up dishes like moussaka, souvlaki and spanakopita (spinach pie). Numerous street open-front shops also sell gyros, tzatziki, and pastries like baklava.

While spending time in Piraeus. don’t miss the opportunity to visit a few excellent museums in the city. Discover more information HERE.
