Todays Images • Frozen Greenland, Stark & Isolated

Greenland is the world’s largest island, covering about 834,000 square miles. However, with a population of less than 60,000, it has the lowest population densities globally. Because 79% of the island is covered by an ice sheet and another 17% being exposed solid, barren rock, all its towns and settlements are located on the ice-free, coastal areas.

Perhaps because cruise ships are looking for new itinerary destinations, Greenland is becoming a new port of call. The town of Nuuk with about 20,000 residents serves as the capital and largest settlement, home to about one third of the island’s population, followed the three other towns of Sisimiut, Ilulissat, and Qaqortoq (pictured here).
