A Highlight To Any Trip To Rome

The Trevi Fountain (La Fontana di Trevi) is one of the most famous fountains in the world and a major tourist attraction in Rome. Though a fountain had existed at the location of the Trevi Fountain since ancient times, it wasn’t until 1629, Pope Urban VIII commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to sketch renovations, that the fountain began to take its current shape.

The current fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Its imposing beauty and symbolic significance make it an icon of the eternal city.

Throwing coins in the fountain started with the film, Three Coins Three Coins in the Fountain where the film’s three stars ( Clifton Webb, Dorothy McGuire, and Jean Peters) throw coins while making a wish .Today’s tradition holds that throwing a coin into the fountain ensures a return to Rome, while throwing two coins promises love, and throwing three coins promises marriage. The fountain has also been featured in other famous movie scenes, including the iconic scene from Federico Fellini’s film “La Dolce Vita.”

I’ve always thought that black and white photographs simplify images and draw you deeper into the actual image depicted. This forces us to pay special attention to the underlying composition and significance of the subject being presented. I recently visited a gallery showing of historic images that mostly were sepias that seemed to add an additional weight to the images displayed.
