Anti-Tourist Sentiment Part 1 Cruising

John Kerry claimed “leisure travel and tourism in general are a major contributor to increasing aviation emissions with air travel being a major cause for the increasing green-house gas emissions from the transportation sector.

This is something we don’t understand, but there is a growing anti-tourist sentiment around the world. At its roots are several issues with global warming being the most popular. There have been a number of articles recently indicating that there are movements that claim that travel and tourism are a needless wastes of energy that contributes to global warming*1. Also cruise ships are also regularly accused of wasting energy and contributing to ocean pollution*2.

Another common complaint is that the increasing number of tourists are now becoming a major cause of city congestion that contribute to rising costs in accommodations, restaurants and other services*3.

The number of seaports that are closing access to cruise ships or are restricting the number of visits is growing and cruise ships are facing increasing restrictions from a number of ports around the world claiming either environmental or economic concerns or both.

Smaller ports from Key West, Florida to Belfast, Maine, are considering or have enacted bans on cruise ships carrying large numbers of passengers, often effectively prohibiting nearly all cruise traffic to the area. Additionally, popular destinations such as Amsterdam and Venice are implementing measures to limit or reshape cruise ship visits, aiming to mitigate claimed negative impacts.

Venice is a good case in point. After local activists pushed the city government to eliminate cruise ships the city with the support of the United Nations commissioned a study to evaluate the impact of cruise ships on Venice. That study found the impact minor with seasonal storms being the biggest threat concern. Not getting the hoped for result the city again, with support from the United Nations, commissioned a second study. Based on its results most cruise ships were banned. The result was cruise ships began to stop at other nearby Italian ports and provid tours into Venice.

Ports from Juneau, Alaska to Mediterranean ports like Barcelona and Palma, are also tightening regulations, which can significantly disrupt cruise itineraries. The trend reflects a broader movement among port cities to manage the total number of tourists and placate local resident groups*3 with their claims of overcrowding and environmental degradation. Consequently, travelers may find their itineraries increasingly altered as other ports adopt similar restrictions.

Overall, these developments are often having an impact on how cruise tourism is being regarded by local governments. In many cases it’s vocal activists who are using numerous issues to stir up citizens using arguments like sustainability, inflation pressures and community well-being, while attacking opponents as reckless capitalists who value money over quality of life.

Unfortunately the two opposing points of view often are overly radical and narrowly focused but that seems to be the trend in political discourse and activism today. In truth both sides have points to consider but one fact is often ignored. Many local economies around the world are significantly dependent on tourism dollars and eliminating that segment of the economy is likely to be replaced by something that will have a greater negative impact on the local community’s environment, income, standard of living and overall quality of life.

The good news for tourism and cruising specifically is that for every community and government that chooses to ban or restrict tourists or cruise ships there are several more ready to embrace tourists and cruise ships. In 2024 cruise ports of call numbered three times the number that were available in 2000.

*1- Unfortunately global warming has become an emotional argument that often is used to shut down reasoned conversation. What are the true causes and consequences and what actions are reasonable considering the economic costs and likely negative results of policies.

*2 – Most arguments against cruise ship impact on the ocean and environment are on out of date studies and data. Today the impact that large cruise ships have on ocean pollution and sea life are virtually not measurable. This is a result of the application of modern technology, new policies and regulations with a future generation of cruise ships being capable of even eliminating the use of fossil fuels.

Discover the Best Western Presidenti in Rome

Best Western Presidenti in Rome, Italy

This is a 4-star hotel near Rome’s Colosseum and the Colosseum Metro Station.

We’ve visited Rome a number of times and usually select a hotel near the termni, making it convenient to catch trains and the Metro. On our last visit we traveled with our son and his family and he is the one that suggested the Best Western Presidenti. We were pleasantly surprised. Rates were very reasonable and in line with other Rome hotels, it was a short six or seven block walk to the Colosseum and a similar distance to the termini.

Best Western still allows us to use our Best Wester points (that’s becoming rare in Europe hotels) and with our Best Western membership, breakfast was free. The staff was friendly and very helpful and the rooms were much more than expected. Our son got a 2 bedroom suite for US$360 per night in season…

Listed Services & Amenities

We usually use public transportation in Rome and catch trains to the airport and to Civitavecchia to catch a cruise. In asking for options to the airport the desk person said they used a car service and they booked our transfer at a really good fare 😉

The Amazing World Of Digital Photo Editing

Today a majority of people use there cell phones as cameras and travelers are no exception. But when it comes to keeping a photographic record of trips a majority of cell phone users don’t make full use of the devices built-in photo editors. From iPhones to Androids most newer phones have AI photo editing capability. In addition to phones our computers apps also contain a number of advanced photo software as well as systems for organizing photo collections.

Editing Options:

Brightness, Color and Contrast

These settings have long been a staple of digital editing and make it reasonably easy to improve images by brightening the image, opening shadows and intensifying colors.

Shadows and Highlights

These are additional easy options for improving photos. Lightening shadows can reveal details in dark shadows without affecting lighter regions while highlights lowers brightness without changing shadow areas. Often using the Contrast feature after working with shadows and highlights can further improve the image.

Cropping

Many pictures can use a little tightening of the frame to help highlight the main element and improve composition. One important thing to try and achieve is to leave the photo in a traditional rectangle in landscape or portrait orientation with a ratio similar to a standard letter paper.

When taking photographs a good practice to get into is to use higher resolution settings and photograph a large area. This offers the option of selecting a cropped image later when taking the time to review your images and after cropping the image still is sharp.

Sharpen

This is another common feature that simply tries to sharpen a blurry photograph. While it doesn’t have the ability to fix a lot of blur it can make a picture seem overall a bit sharper. If you over do it ,it has a tendency to introduce fine speckling to the photo though.

AI Sky Replacement

When taking photographs in the past we were limited to what the weather was doing and what the sky looked like. Another feature that is becoming available in many applications is AI sky replacement. It usually features a built in library of sky images (solid blue sky, clouds, sunsets etc.) with many systems also allowing you to add to this library. With just a few glitches this is a remarkable tool.

AI Editing

Object removal

This feature is actually magical and is common to most new Apple and Google systems. Have a great photo but it’s cluttered with people? Maybe it would be perfect if that car wasn’t there? With a photo displayed open the EDIT feature. You will then have the option of changing the spot (or brush) size. Move the slider so the spot will just barely cover the width of the element you want removed. Use the spot to simply paint over the element you want to remove. It usually works best if you try to work strokes in either a horizontal or vertical direction. It may take several repeated steps to work completely, but in a majority of cases the element disappears as if it was never there.

While working or when done you have an option called UNDO that gives you a chance to going back a step and try something over and over again. Don’t like the result? Simply start over.

One important thing to keep in mind is AI isn’t a mind reader nor can it isolate an element in an area of complex shapes and colors. It will always try but can, at times, create a real mess of things. Also most phones utilize libraries that save a copy of the original before editing. When done you have the new image along with a copy of the original image.

The city of Lima is one of South Americas largest metropolitan areas with a population of almost 13 million. The city also spread out during that period increasing its area by seven fold.

Geographically it sits on a coastal plain on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Because the prevailing winds come from the east with the Andes capturing most of the moisture and rain the region has an arid climate.

The city’s historic original area is today contained completely within the Miraflores District, home to upscale shopping, many good restaurants and hotels.
