A gathering storm is a fitting backdrop for a lighthouse in the approaches to the Shetland Islands.
You’ll find lighthouses all over the world and they all were created for one purpose; to warn sailors at sea about treacherous waters. Today that purpose is being overshadowed by satellites and technology, but they still stand their lonely vigil and remain as a symbol of our seafaring history.

There’s no better description for this bird than pirate.Their reputation as the “pirates of the Caribbean” comes from their habit of attacking other birds in flight to steal their catches.
In flight they are beautiful birds that ride air currents while barely moving their wings. They also have a habit of working in pairs so they can gang up on other birds with a fresh catch. One makes a direct attack while the other stays below to catch the dropped fish.
One of the most fascinating aspects of frigate birds is their behavior as kleptoparasites; thet frequently steal food from other seabirds and even snatch chicks from their nests . This aggressive foraging strategy comes from their large size and ability to soar effortlessly with minimal wing flapping that helps them cover vast distances in search of food, and makes them highly efficient aerial predators.

We’re not serious bird watchers, but like almost everyone we find the vanity and character of these creatures fascinating and can’t pass up the opportunity to photograph them. Traveling the world and experiencing them in different environments just adds a new dimension to our travels…
This toucan was always around near our Amazon camp in Ecuador. Turns out the staff regularly fed it to keep it near.
So far this is my favorite. The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) shot in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

This barred owl was a common sight near our home. It would hang out near a walking trail and seemed to enjoy swooping down near people and startling them.
It and I developed a relationship – I’d hoot and it would hoot backevery time we walked on the trail.
A Quick Bird Story
I had aunts that were serious birders all their lives. They would catch a flight to go a thousand miles because of a specific bird sighting. Once when they were visiting us in South Florida I mentioned that there had been a recent visitor at our backyard bird feeder that was particularly beautiful and I showed them a photograph. It turned out to be a painted bunting and they were furious. It was a bbird that had evaded them their whole lives!

Hoodoosin Bryce Canyon, Utah a trail leads down into one of world’s most interesting geological formations – the Hoodoos.
Hoodoos are tall, thin spires of rock created by millions of years of erosion from wind, water, and ice, often topped with a harder, protective caprock. They form in sedimentary rock, and the world’s highest concentration is found in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. Key formation processes include water seeping into cracks, freezing, and expanding to widen the cracks (frost wedging), along with wind and water carrying away softer rock layers beneath the caprock.
