Sakurajima Volcano stands over Kagoshima, Japan

Located in southern Japan the Kagoshima area is known for its mountainous terrain and volcanic activity from several volcanoes, including Sakurajima located on the other side of the bay from the main city some 10 miles away. In 2025 through March the number of eruptions of Sakurajima volcano added up to about 85. The number peaked in 2018, with 479 eruptions that year. The last major eruption was in 1914, when it spewed out ash and lava for months destroying numerous homes within a fifteen mile radius.

Todays Images • The Magellanic Cormorant

Seabirds Nesting On Islands In the Beagle Channel

Nesting season in the Southern Hemisphere is usually January through April and on a visit to Terra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel it was difficult to wrap our heads around the sheer numbers of seabirds everywhere.

Magellanic Cormorants are hardy and rather shy sea birds, building nests on steep cliff faces overlooking the water. They are less gregarious than other cormorant species and often nest in single pairs rather than in colonies.

This is a seabird that feeds in marine waters and the range of the Cormorant is limited to coastal areas, and is not typically found away from large bodies of water.

Today’s Images, Approaching the Alaska Range

Traveling from Anchorage to Denali we rode through mile after mile of virgin forest on a rode as straight as an arrow. Several hours into the trip we climbed a mild grade for several miles and as we reached the crest of a ridge the vista of The Alaska Range was spread out before us.

The Alaska Range is a 600-mile-long mountain range in southcentral Alaska, from Lake Clark at its southwest end to the White River in Canada’s Yukon Territory in the southeast. Denali (sorry, now Mount McKinley again) , the highest mountain in North America, is located in the center of the Alaska Range.

Hiking On Haleakalā, Maui

Haleakalā offers a glimpse into a landscape that leaves the impression that you’re visiting Mars, with the bonus of spectacular vistas of the Pacific and the island of Maui spread out at your feet.

The view from Haleakalā

Haleakalā dominates the Hawaiian island of Maui which is actually created by two volcanic cones joined by a small stretch of land. The larger volcano, Haleakalā towers 10,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean and is still classified as active, though currently quiet.

Discover Esztergom: Hungary’s Often Overlooked Gem

Most people visiting Hungary think Budapest is the historic center of the country but Hungary was actually born in Esztergom

To catch the train from Budapest to Esztergom, depart from the Budapest Nyugati Pályaudvar station, which has frequent trains that take about an hour to arrive. Tickets cost around US$3.25 one way. From the Esztergom train station, you can easily walk to the castle or take a bus to go to the city center. Confirm train schedules before starting out.

Of course Budapest is the modern heart of Hungary but don’t pass up a visit to historic Esztergom. Located in northwestern Hungary it was the original capital of a unified Hungary and sits on the Danube River on the border with Slovakia.

Esztergom is one of the most important cities in Hungary featuring a number of significant historic buildings. It is the site of the largest church in Hungary, Esztergom Basilica, that sits on Castle Hill, with its 72 meter high central dome being seen for many miles around. The building of the present neoclassical church was begun in 1822 on the site of the original 12th-century Christian church dedicated to Saint Stephen I.

Next to the Basilica is Esztergom Castle, one of the most important surviving examples of Renaissance architecture in Hungary. It was the home of regional ruling Cardinal who died in the Battle of Mohács in 1526. By 1530, King Habsburg Ferdinand I took up residence in the castle. The unification of the country of Hungary is credited to Stephen I, also known as King Saint Stephen of Esztergom, who became the first King of Hungary around 1000 AD, who ruled until his death in 1038. Some of his major accomplishments during his reign included:

  • Establishing Christianity as the official religion of Hungary
  • Building a strong central government and creating a system of counties to govern the country
  • Promoted education and founded a number of schools and monasteries
  • Encouraged trade and commerce, and established diplomatic relations with other European kingdoms
  • Expanded Hungary’s borders through military campaigns and securing its position as a major power in Central Europe.]
