Cruise Port Warnemünde, Germany

Warnemünde, Germany isa small port located on the Baltic It’s a popular German summer resort town famous for its beaches , but it is also Germany’s main cruise port. It is also a favorite port of call because of its direct train service to Berlin.

Where Your Ship Docks

Because Warnemünde is Germany’s principle cruise departure port it offers extensive port facilities that are located directly across from the Warnemünde train station.

Wheelchair Accessibility

This port has a developed cruise ship pier but the ease of disembarking varies by the pier and individual ships gangway designs. The Warnemünde pier disembarks right next to downtown. For passengers using wheelchairs there can be a moderate ramp incline to deal with but generally the town is level with only a few curbs to navigate.

Transportation

The town is small and easy to walk around in with a number of good cafes and restaurants. Probably the most popular activity in this port of call is the train service to Berlin.

The train station at Warnemünde is the last stop on a number of train routes and the station is just two blocks from the cruise

port. You can easily catch a regional train (RE) or an intercity train (IC/ICE) from Warnemünde into Berlin with most trips being under 2.5-3 hours. Regional trains make more stops along the way, while intercity trains are faster with fewer stops. Ticket prices start around €40-60 for a round trip journey.

In Berlin the Central Train Station is in the center of town with a number of major attractions being only an easy walk away.

Local Attractions

The Warnemünde Lighthouse – An iconic structure that offers stunning views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding area and is located at the end of a wide pedestrian walkway next to the beach.

The Alter Strom is the center of Warnemünde featuring a canal filled with boats and lined by restaurants and quant shops.

Take a stroll straight down from cruise docks along the west pier that runs 1,500 feet to the Baltic Sea. The pier will usuall have a sailing ship or two docked but really serves as a breakwater to protect the port from the Baltic Sea currents.

Harbor Tours – There are several boat tours from the picturesque harbor, offering views of the Baltic coastline, charming local docks with fishing boats and quant architecture.

Local Cuisine – Try local seafood dishes at waterfront restaurants that showcase fresh catches from the Baltic Sea along with traditional German fare. Also on a port visit be sure and take advantage of local bakeries and cafes.

The Windmill – Not really an attraction but n town there is actually a traditional windmill that was built in 1866 and until 1991 it still milled corn. It’s privately owned and is being remodeled.

McDonalds, Internationally A Name To Depend On

International Travel And Finding Refuge In McDonalds

Love it or hate it, McDonalds has a huge international presence. There are few places internationally where you cannot find the “Golden Arches” and regionally some McDonalds have improved on the brand beyond what you find in the United States.

As you travel there are a number of good reasons to search out McDonalds near you:

Amsterdam

Easy access to clean restrooms is one important reason. In many places around the globe finding public restrooms can be a challenge and often there is a fee involved in gaining entrance. After visiting hundreds of the Golden Arches all around the world we’ve never found one without public restrooms. At times you might need to pay a small fee but often they are still free.

Finding decaf coffee internationally is often nearly impossible. In my case, for medical reasons, I’m supposed to avoid caffein and there are many countries and cities where there just isn’t any, except at McDonalds and Starbucks.

A place where you can expect a good value and a familiar menu. While there are regional and ethnic food differences on the menu, usually you know what to expect when you walk into a McDonalds. While you probably shouldn’t get in the habit of eating mostly fast food hamburgers there are times when a quarter pounder with cheese just feels like comfort food.

Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City

At times you’ll find some really pleasant surprises. While it never seemed to catch on in the United States there are places where McCafe is a huge success. Image walking into a McDonalds and discovering overstuffed chairs, sofas and out-of-the-way seating areas next to a fancy coffee counter and pastry cases that would rival any bakery. From the Azores to Germany to Hungary you’ll find MacCafe is an amazing experience and none in America even come close.

If you frequently travel internationally in addition to McDonalds you’ll find a number of locations of American food and culture dotted around the world with names like Starbucks, Burger King, Five Guys, KFC and even Krispy Creme. Also there are brands emerging outside of America that are learning from the American franchises like Jollibee. This is a fast-food chain that was founded in the Philippines. Today Jollibee has expanded globally that now has 39 restaurants in the United States along with outlets in Canada, Saudi Arabia, Europe (Spain, Italy, UK) with about 1,500 outlets worldwide and still growing. Its menu typically features a variety of items such as fried chicken, burgers, spaghetti, and depending on location Filipino dishes.

A Portuguese Treat

Visiting Portugal? One thing not to miss is the Portuguese pastries and one in particular. While most European countries have every right to be proud of their baking, each area usually has a particular speciality they call their own. In Portugal it’s the Almofada.

The ‘almofada’ (in English it’s pillow) refers to a pastry in Portuguese cuisine, characterized by its soft texture and often filled with sweet ingredients. There are several variations of this pastry, including different fillings like cream or fruit but a creamy custard is the most common, Almofada is recognized as a symbol of great Portuguese baking.

We recommend an almofada with afternoon coffee for a special treat in Portugal.

We’d never heard of them and the name was just too irresistible, so I grabbed a shot from our bus as we went by.Turns out that Bastard Burgers is a popular burger chain in Stockholm. Some reviewers compared their burgers to Shake Shack in the U.S. There are several locations of Bastard Burgers throughout Stockholm and they’re growing rapidly with each location described as having gteat food and a vibrant atmosphere that appeals to the younger crowd.

Every trip to Europe surprises us with the growing number of burger places. From Athens to Stockholm you can now choose from a number of well known American names as well as new local offerings..

And you thought you couldn’t find a hamburger in Stockholm!
