The Jeepney
Standing on the sidewalk in Manila the traffic light turns from red to green as if signaling the start of a race. The shiny metallic, seemingly custom made vehicles, roar to life. With a massive roar followed by plumes of smoke billowing into the air the traffic jumps forward as drivers jocky for position. It’s Manila, where the Jeepney has flourished for more over sixty years.
Today Manila traffic consists of some of the world’s oddest assortment of gas powered vehicles. Everything from Jeepneys to motorcycles with sidecars and trailers.
Jeepneys are the Philippines’ major form of public transportation. They came into being when Jeeps were left behind when American forces left the Philippines at the end of World War II. Filipinos began recycling them into unique and highly decorated buses with long mounted benches that would hold twenty plus passengers. From those beginnings Jeepneys have evolved their style with many now sporting the Mercedes-Benz star on the front.
